Like I said, according to a social worker I know, there is more incest going on in San Mateo County California than a lot of places....but this is direct incest (father-daughter) and is in a major urban area.

West Virginia, where I grew up, is the butt of a lot of jokes about inbreeding. The only time that this happens IS you have two or three families living in remote mountain areas...Obviously over a number of generations there is inbreeding....but this is really quite rare. Kelley is right to point out that this smear against the rural poor is more than pointing out a reality...a reality that represents a miniscule percentage of the people. Many members of the Left will only take a progressive stance on an issue when it becomes fashionable to do so. I remember a time on the Left when homosexuality was a disease of bourgeois decadence.

I assume these same Leftists wont defend the rural poor, and especially the white rural poor, because the latter are touted to be "redneck", reactionaries, etc.

Certainly there are people like that among the rural poor but how many "uncontaminated" urban people are there? Most urban people know the correct symbols, signs and language to put out in order to show how unracist, enlightened they are, but you dont have to scratch the surface very long to see how thin that veneer is.

Anyway, this vision of the rural poor is incomplete and ignorant. I remember my classmates and their parents in WV were not backward and unenlightened as is projected on them. And I challenge anyone here from any city or country to find a more militant working class than that found among the rural WV/Kentucky coal miners before the coal operators hauled ass.

At first, I was critical of Kelley and thought that she was reading too much into words....Now I am not so sure about that.
