Noam Chomsky often makes mention of how trends in "unimportant" rural areas wind up (evangelical fundamentalism, militias, whatever) having a large effect on the country once they gain steam. The celebration of May 1st as "Loyalty Day" is making a comeback "in light of 9/11" as they all say:

George W. Bush gave a thumbs up to Loyalty Day last year -

Loyalty Day has been returning after an absence of 17 years to Kentucky (I wonder if any Harlan County residents shot at by Duke Power gun thugs will show up to celebrate with the veterans)?

Ohio is having a Loyalty Day parade as well - like many of them, holding them on the weekend to increase turnout, to increase convenience for possible attendees like Ms. Furuhashi -

Washington State is having a loyalty day parade as well - http://www.funbeach.com/pages/calen_loyalty.html

Virginia - http://www.vfw-virginia.com/generalorders/Feb02/loyaltyparade.html

Wisconsin - http://www.wisinfo.com/postcrescent/news/archive/local_3444074.shtml

Massapequa, Long Island, NY - http://www.newsday.com/mynews/ny-2684943apr28.story

and so forth and so on - May Day "loyalty" parades are making a comeback all over the country.

Well, that said, if anyone is interested in celebrating their loyalty to the *working class* in New York City today, there will be the annual May Day celebration happening today in Union Square park (14th Street and Broadway), from noon until 5PM. Performers include MATT JONES (Founder of the SNCC Freedom Singers), AMINA BARAKA (radical poet), ANNE FEENEY (Labor singer), RAY KORONA (topical songwriter), JOHN PIETARO (Labor activist/musician), KIRK KELLY (punk-folk musician), SANDRA RODRIGUEZ (Feminist composer-playwright), BREAD IS RISING (poetry collective). Plus guest speakers and tabling/networking by progressive organizations.

There will also be a march & rally to support workers' rights & general amnesty for undocumented immigrants starting at 4 PM farther downtown - rally outside INS offices, 26 Federal Plaza(B'way & Worth St, 1/2 to Franklin St, A/C/E to Chambers St, 4/5/6/N/R to City Hall); 5 pm: march to rally in Battery Park. Sponsored by many groups. Contact Coalition for Human Rights of Immigrants (CHRI), 212-254-2591, fax 212-645-6243, <chri at itapnet.org>, http://www.itapnet.org/chri
