Not at all. The welfare state in the New Deal sense went great guns until about 1978. Since then I would say it has had a bumpy ride and neither sprang forward nor fell back.

The welfare debate has certainly changed for the worse, but there is less to the systemic change than meets the eye.

So, are you saying that the political economy of the United States has remained the same between 1950 - 2000; that the Welfare Economics of the New Deal etc are still part of the way social and economic policy is made.
