Nah, the zionists were debating this point as early as their first
congress. Some opined that political zionism (the demand for a Jewish
state) would mean nothing more than the building of a larger Jewish ghetto
and that this would sit very well with those Jewish leaders who were
threatened by the progressive emancipation of the Jews in Europe since the
French revolution.
One would do well to remember that the emancipation of Jews in Europe DID
represent a threat to some Jews.
