A big "if." In the early 90s, Dole's staff had a nickname for Evans
and Novak--Errors and No Facts. "You've got to realize," one of them
said to me once, "that what Novak writes bears a completely random
relationship to the truth. It's not that he has a principled stand
against telling the truth--if telling the truth is the thing he
thinks will advance his ball furthest, he'll do that. But if a
half-truth or a lie will serve his strategic purposes better, he'll
prefer that."
