[Also the US was claiming the moral high ground on this issue just a little while ago. That claim doesn't seem to hold up.]

INTERNATIONAL ECONOMY: Code 'is failing' to prevent rich companies from bribing officials

By ALAN BEATTIE

Bribery of foreign public officials by companies from rich countries is still rife in spite of an international convention to stamp it out, a leading campaign organisation said yesterday.

Transparency International (TI) said that among the rich countries, US companies were perceived as some of the worst offenders, despite having had laws to prevent bribery for more than 20 years. It said that the convention against bribery abroad adopted two years ago by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the club of rich countries, had failed to make much of an impact.
