Complicating matters further is the fact that Jews don't agree about who is a Jew. The ruling Orthodox religious establishment in Israel would not consider me a Jew (father was Jewish but not mother), nor my wife (raised a Baptist, converted to Judaism by a Reform rabbi).
BTW, IMHO, it is one of the incomprehendible perversities of American Reform Judaism that they donate immense amounts of money to support a religious establishment that both denies their Jewry and suppresses their movement in Israel.
