The Religious State's Right to Exist

Setting aside post-modernist musings about the relevance/importance of the State... this issues is way to complicated to theorise about theories... These may be somewhat rhetorical but should make for good discussions.

Here are some difficult points. If a group of Muslims, or Christians created a state in the modern period (pomos please be quiet), ran it along strict Islamic/Christian laws and crushed ANY opposition in the most brutal way, how would the USA respond?

But then again, the Taliban (who used Islam to justify some of their domestic policies) - not unlike the Zionists, today (who use aspects of Judaism for their very presence in post-War Palestine/Israel) - were thugs and brutally repressive (BEFORE) their comrades (we are told Bin Laden and his crew) attacked New York City and Washington. The thing is that very few people - other than some of us Lefty/Feminist-types opposed the Taliban.

If, an African leader, say, Mugabe, who is not a nice man, bulldozed and bombed his opposition, and used tanks and the military to quell domestic resistance to oppression and occupation, would the West attempt to isolate/depose/apply sanctions - probably yes.
