Monument to Sakharov may be built in Moscow

MOSCOW. May 20 (Interfax) - The Moscow government will form a commission to erect a monument to the well-known scientist and human rights activist Andrei Sakharov, Sergei Yushenkov, a Duma deputy and co- chairman of the Liberal Russia party, told Interfax, citing a response to his inquiry with the Moscow Mayor's Office.

The address to Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, which was initiated by the party Liberal Russia and included a proposal to erect a monument in Moscow dedicated to Sakharov was signed by Fazil Iskander, Eldar Ryazanov, Marlen Khutsiyev, Andrei Bitov, Genrikh Borovik, Vladimir Voinovich, Vasily Aksyonov, Otto Latsis, Alexei Simonov, Boris Berezovsky, Vladimir Bukovsky and other well-known politicians and figures of literature and culture.

Yushenkov said that a flower-laying ceremony at the memorial board at the house where Sakharov lived will take place on May 21, Sakharov's birthday. In the evening, a concert devoted to the 81th anniversary of Sakharov's birth will take place in the large conservatory hall. [
