Curiously, it seems that most of the increase in boozing happened in bars, and not at home. Whenever I go into the liquor store down the street, the owner asks me about the stock market and the Fed, and I ask him about his business (are the $200 bottles of vintage tequila moving? how many credit cards are getting rejected?). He said there was no pickup in business after 9/11. But the bars were full. I guess people wanted to get tanked sociably.
