Like I said, one foot in each camp. There are things to love about it, and things to hate. It's too big and complicated to have a single dominant feeling about it. That said, though, I doubt I could live anywhere else. I have to admit that on the morning of 9/11, I thought, "No one would ever fly a plane into a skyscraper in Melbourne." But that's not a very practical thought. I feel so much a part of U.S. culture that I don't think I could live anywhere else. So I compromise and live in a place that's not much like the rest of the country - a little island off the coast of America, as Spalding Gray once put it.
