I'm wondering where one could find any blow-by-blow responses to Vargas Llosa, Montaner and Apuelo's bestselling Guide to the Perfect Latin American Idiot (1996; English translation, 1999), a perfectly dreadful neoliberal screed (with a foreword by Alvaro's Daddy) which plays up the failings of the region's Left while minimizing the crimes of the hegemon to the north. Any replies by chief targets Ariel Dorfman and Eduardo Galeano? Of course, it's not difficult to tally up the numerous errors of fact and reasoning in the book (which draws blood only in the chapter on Peronism), but reading hatchet jobs written by others is so much more fun. Also, the thought of Lawrence E. Harrison and Shirley Christian taking comfort in books such as these is more than I can bear, so I really have to ask.
