FWIW, neo-con scholar on US Communism, John Earl Haynes, has a book on the Minnesota DFL and the CPUSA/PopFront. http://www.johnearlhaynes.org/ He has co-written alot w/Harvey Klehr. (Klehr's sister, in the 70's, was in the Georgia Communist League, also mentioned in the Elbaum book.) Klehr's book on the CPUSA in the 30's is the only one I've ever seen blurbed by both Hal Draper, the neo-Trot, and right-wing socdem 'bro of his, ex-Daily Worker correspondent circa the 30's into WWII, Theodore Draper.
