I strongly agree with Chip Bertlet's comments on the lack of substantive 
parallels between NSMs and Islamic movements in the third world; if there is a 
comparison to be drawn between the left and political Islam it seems to me that 
the only viable route is through the theology of liberation. cf. Shabir Akhtar 
"The Final Imperative: An Islamic Theology of Liberation."
