Bloodied student in retreat About 1,500 students gathered Monday night to protest against the poor living conditions in their dormitory. The students said their dorms didn't have food, water or electricity.

The crowd began throwing stones and bricks at police and passing cars when authorities tried to put down the demonstration at Kabul University. Several members of the police were injured by flying rocks.

On Tuesday, the protesters gathered on the streets again, shouting "death to the killers of our colleague." Police used water cannon and fired shots into the air to try to control the crowd.

The protest came a year after the fall of the Taliban government amid complaints that the new government is strapped for cash and isn't doing enough to improve people's lives.
