Personally, I prefer footnote fetish to flame fetish. One thing that compensates for much of tedium on mailing lists, for me, is that I get to meet some improbably learned people -- especially those who don't publish their learning in print.

Risking essentialism, I'd say yes. However, there are much fewer women on left-wing mailing lists (except ones that are explicitly named feminist, which tend to have less traffic than male-dominated ones) than men, so my sample is too small for me to make a firm judgment about it. -- Yoshie
