I was just reading a book about the Mexican war, where Whigs, who were against it (and who would vanish 10 years later), ended up in a similarly compromising position, being against the war but supporting all the military appropriations that made it possible. One of them, referring to how how the Federalist Party had gotten wiped out by opposing the War of 1812, said, "I guess now I'll have to vote for War, Famine and Pestilence."
