About BFRO

Black Film Research Online (BFRO) is a resource guide for the study of Black film culture. We define Black film culture quite broadly to include the works of Black filmmakers from across the African Diaspora; the production, distribution, and exhibition of films by, for and about Blacks; issues of Black spectatorship and reception; and images of Black people in film from the invention of the medium in the late 19th century to the present.

The site, launched in June 2002, is consistently updated to offer a comprehensive and annotated guide to the many Internet, academic, collector, and general-interest and featuring material on Black cinema. Black Film Research Online is accessible to professional researchers, teachers, students, and others with general interests in Blacks and cinema.

This site is produced and maintained by the University of Chicago by Jacqueline Stewart (Assistant Professor, Department of English, Committee on Cinema and Media Studies; Committee on African and African American Studies) and TreaAndrea Russworm (Graduate Student, Department of English). This project has been generously supported by a grant from the University of Chicago Center for Teaching and Learning (Elizabeth Chandler, Director).
