I think you're referring to the Joseph Smith biography, No One Knows My History, by Fawn Brodie. I read it 9-10 years ago and remember it being quite good. It's not so good if a complete history of the Church is what's looked for.

there was a book -- I think called Nobody Knows My Name -- maybe 24-30 years old. It must be good since Mormans had it removed from most libraries and I never heard of it again. Let me know if you find it.
