A billboard of newly elected Republican Sen. Norm Coleman along Interstate Hwy. 94 in St. Paul was defaced with swastika markings and other Nazi references, apparently sometime Wednesday night, according to St. Paul police.
Senior Cmdr. Lisa McGinn said police are investigating the incident as property damage and possibly a hate crime. Coleman is Jewish.
The billboard shows Coleman, a U.S. flag and the message "Congratulations Sen. Norm Coleman." Someone sprayed "Newest member of the SS" onto the board.
The billboard, near Prior Avenue, is owned by Clear Channel Outdoor, whose offices are closed until Monday. The Coleman campaign did not return calls Thursday night.
