*San Francisco* -- A man was clinging to life and two children were injured after the driver of a limousine carrying a candidate for state Assembly plowed into the three pedestrians at a parade in San Francisco's Chinatown on Saturday.
The driver, Jeff Rubi, a.k.a. Jeff Cabrere, 44, was arrested and charged with attempted murder and driving under the influence, police said, adding that they believe he intentionally ran over the man and the two children, an 11-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl.
Rubi was driving a Lincoln Town Car carrying Gail Neira, the Republican contender for the 13th Assembly District, during a parade celebrating Taiwanese independence, said San Francisco police Sgt. Neville Gittens.
After the car struck the pedestrians at the intersection of Clay and Stockton streets at about 5 p.m., officers heard Rubi say, "I hope somebody's dead," according to Gittens.
The 22-year-old victim, who was not identified, was in extremely critical condition with pelvic and chest injuries at San Francisco General Hospital, according to a nursing supervisor there. The children were treated and released Saturday night.
Rubi tested positive for drugs, police said.
Neira, a San Francisco native, won the Republican nomination for the race with 3,379 votes and will face Democrat Mark Leno in November. She has been a member of San Francisco's Republican County Central Committee and in 2000 ran for the same seat but lost the primary.
