Byrd is one of the most effective people in the
Senate.  People rant about his pork habit, but
what else is he supposed to do for his folks in
West Virginia?  Wait for the Dems to be pro-labor?

He is more responsible than anyone else for stopping
the balanced budget amendments.

I hate the Senate, and the fillibuster is one of the reasons. And 
Byrd, who keeps a tattered copy of the consitution in his pocket, is 
a ridiculous figure. But, hey, anything that impedes the forced march 
towards war is a good thing. How can anyone think otherwise?
