The power elites in Europe and Japan lost colonies and passed the imperial torch to the USA, which allowed them to give back more in goods, services, and free time to workers at home; workers in Europe and Japan were liberated from the material and ideological weights of their respective empires, thus able to better concentrate on fighting for their own well-being. -- Yoshie
