I can't remember who pointed this out in the way that caught my attention, but basically the argument was that all relationships involve some amounts of abstraction about the other person. Most of this has to do with sexual attraction and romance, but sometimes it can involve other things, such as money, family and security. On the philosophical level, it has to do with the fact that we truly can't meld with another person.
