ACTIVISTS OCCUPY U.N. SECURITY COUNCIL CHAMBER

NEW YORK, October 21, 2002, 9:50 a.m. - Members of No Blood For Oil!, a coalition against the planned invasion of Iraq, have occupied the Security Council chamber at the United Nations. The activists have made the following demands:

* Immediate lifting of economic sanctions against Iraq. * No U.N. permission at any time for an invasion of Iraq. * Explicit U.N. condemnation of the new U.S. policy of anticipatory self-defense.

The activists have pledged to continue to occupy the Security Council chamber until these demands are agreed to.

Economic sanctions are directly responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis over the past decade and have in no way lessened the threat of war. The U.N. must stop sanctioning this inhuman policy.

The U.S. is applying tremendous pressure on Security Council members to give their blessing to a criminal war of aggression against Iraq. No Blood For Oil! demands that the U.N. refuse to make the nations of the world a party to this illegal, immoral war.

Recently, President Bush announced a new defense posture that effectively asserts the U.S.'s right to attack any country at any time under the "principle" of anticipatory self-defense. This policy flies in the face of international law and all peoples' right to self-determination. The U.N. must explicitly reject and condemn it.

No Blood For Oil! are a coalition of activists pledged to resist the U.S. push for war through direct action. We call on all Americans to do everything in their power to stop aggression against Iraq.
