The decline of Indonesia's once-vaunted shoe-export industry raises questions about the country's long-term competitiveness
By Sadanand Dhume/JAKARTA and Maureen Tkacik/LOS ANGELES
In 1996, Indonesian factories made 38% of Nike's shoes, ahead of China's 34% and Vietnam's tiny 2% share. Six years later, Indonesia's share of Nike footwear production has shrunk to 30% while China's has grown to 38% and Vietnam has zoomed to 15%. The Doson closure could push Indonesia's share down to 26%, further narrowing the gap with Vietnam.
