Infant mortality

Sep 5th 2002
>From The Economist print edition

About 11m children below the age of five die every year around the world from preventable conditions such as malnutrition or illnesses caused by dirty air and water. Child-mortality rates are highest in Afghanistan and several countries in sub-Saharan Africa. In Zambia, Kenya and Zimbabwe, rates are now higher than in 1980. However, they have fallen by more than half in India, Indonesia and Peru over the past two decades. Two years ago, the United Nations agreed to a target to cut child-mortality rates by two-thirds by 2015. This objective may be helped by the agreement at the Johannesburg summit to achieve access to basic sanitation for more of the world's poor.
