Switzerland electorate narrowly rejected a government-backed plan to use some of the country's gold reserves to set up a humanitarian fund.
The Swiss government proposed forming the Solidarity Foundation in 1997 after being criticised for their behaviour during the second world war.
Switzerland's reputation took a battering after it was revealed that its banks had grown rich from the deposits of Holocaust victims, and a neutral Switzerland had turned back thousands of Jewish refugees and profited from selling armaments to both sides. William Hall, Zurich
