<div>Time magazine did an article on the controversy around Bush
wanting to appoint this guy David Hager -- I don't have the citation,
sorry.. It's a done deal now. Hager does not support giving
birth control to unmarried women, asked the FDA to make RU 486
illegal, has written a book called, "Jesus Loves Women", and
recommends prayer and scripture reading to alleviate menstrual
cramps.</div>
<div>Ashcroft is a Pentacostal who believes in prayer and faith
healing to alleviate mental illness.</div>

<font size="-4" color="#000000">WASHINGTON - A physician who has
been criticized for his views on birth control was named to a Food and
Drug Administration panel on women's health policy.<br>
<br>
Dr. W. David Hager, a University of Kentucky
obstetrician-gynecologist, was among 11 physicians appointed Tuesday
to the FDA's Advisory Committee for Reproductive Health Drugs.<br>
<br>
Hager has sought to reverse the panel's 1996 recommendation that led
to approval of the abortion pill, RU-486, has condemned the
birth-control pill and acknowledges he is anti-abortion.<br>
<br>
The Planned Parenthood Federation of America on Tuesday called the
appointment of Hager and other doctors on the panel a "a frontal
assault on reproductive rights that will imperil women's
health."<br>
<br>
It said Hager and his wife, Linda, have recommended "specific
Scripture readings and prayers for such ailments as headaches and
premenstrual syndrome."<br>
<br>
The advisory committee's job is to review and evaluate data - and
make recommendations - on the safety and effectiveness of marketed
and experimental drugs.<br>
<br>
The panel's chair will be Dr. Linda Giudice, chief of reproductive
endocrinology and infertility for the Department of Gynecology and
Obstetrics at the Stanford University Medical Center.<br>
<br>
Dr. Scott Shields Emerson a professor in the Department of
Biostatistics at the University of Washington was among nine other
physicians named to the panel.</font></div>
