Here in B'more a number of houses around the JHU campus have anti-war signs in windows and on lawns. The "hood" I live in has none - but no flags or ribbons either (just car alarms and blasts of the hip hop crap, as usual). But outside B'more, going north I-83 to central PA there is an orgy of flags, and god bless amerika signs. I asked my wife if she would fly a UN flag on her house, but in the last November election she put a Rendell for Governor sign in her lawn and someone run it over with a truck and dropped anti-semitic propaganda on her porch , so she prefers to keep a low profile.
Optimism? This country's population is more fascist than Germans in the 1920s.
