max,
you asked me how i felt syria could defend itself against the US. Lemme
clarify, I shoulda written could defend itself better than Iraq and
probably enough so that the US won't attack. The pentagon seems to have
a penchant for attacking governments with ruined militaries and
depleted resources like Iraq or Afghanistan.
Syria obviously is not a military powerhouse, but it hasn't been
subjected to 12 years of sanctions and bombings, so I'm guessing the US
would be rather wary of getting involved in a military battle with
Syria.
Right now it looks like all this saber rattling is a pretext to achieve
some form of sanctions or the like. It's hard to imagine other nations
going along with this I'd think, but that does appear to be the goal.
