Yes, but their contributions came not because they were Stalinists (insofar as they were) but because they were on the Left. To see Stalinism as a betrayal of socialism -- and to oppose it from the Left, not the Right -- would seem to be correct in 1946 and after. To pose the question as a choice between Stalinism and Thomas or Trilling is sharply to delimit the possibilities. --CGE
