Even if one remains agnostic about the source of Cuba's achievements 
-- another island state, Singapore, has done fabulously too, also 
with considerable repression and thought control -- the argument that 
pre-revolution Cuba was way in front is neither here nor there. 
Argentina used to be way out in front a century ago, and there are 
plenty more examples of those who used to be way out in front.
