A friend of mine active in peace stuff in upper NY
state in the 60s said there was a lot of freelance
pro-war activity by off duty cops and the sort of
rogues they hang out with (if you ever want to meet
criminals, befriend a police officer).  He meant
spying, physical assault, etc.  Sounded a lot like
Central American death squad activity, in theory if
not degree.  So a lot of what happened then may still
be unwritten.
