Palestinian prisoners riot in Israeli jail: Authorities
Reuters Ashkelon (Israel), July 31
Palestinian prisoners rioted at a jail in southern Israel on Thursday, Israeli police and Palestinian officials said.
"They are rioting and police have been called to assist," a police spokesman said. He gave no details, but Shukry Salma, an official at the Palestinian Prisoners Affairs Ministry said that they were rebelling over conditions.
Witnesses said dozens of police cars and ambulances were lined up at the prison in the Mediterranean coastal city of Ashkelon. Palestinian demands for Israel to free all Palestinian prisoners are key to US-led peace efforts.
