Although it got attacked by the orthodox left (for straying from realism), check out De Sica's classic, "Miracle in Milan" for a great bit of left-wing humor and satire.
There is a great scene in which the "owner" of the patch of land cannot be distinguished from the squatters. At a loss of how to distinguish himself, he strikes a "Pharoh" pose. What a scene for making the powerful look stupid and incompetent!
