No, it is certainly not a coincidence. It is, among those persons who trouble themselves to know something about the subjects they discuss, notoriously not a coincidence. The South African Jewish community was well known for showing almost no interest in Zionism during the first half of the twentieth century. It wasn't until the Afrikaaners took power and the imposition of Apartheid that the Jews got scared and started looking for an escape route.
