Just an update about the archives for the mailing list. I've finally gotten around to integrating the first few months of 2003 into the "official" online archive which can be found here:

http://mailman.lbo-talk.org/pipermail/lbo-talk/

I say "official" because despite the fact that you can find archives of this mailing list elsewhere, this is the one that is actually a part of the "package" provided by Doug; it's not meant as a slight to the others who provide this service -- spread the word! One downside to the reworking of the archives is that the URLs all have changed and so Google and other search engines have a lot of out-o-date info now; searching the archives through them will result in wrong answers (though if you click the "Cached" link in Google, you'll get the right document; plus highlighting ...) for a while until they catch up.

So ... I've also put up a dedicated search engine here:

http://search.lbo-talk.org/

The index gets rebuilt every 10 minutes or so, so it should be as up-to-date as the archive. I still need to add the ability to sort by posting date, so look for that fairly soon.

I'm working on getting the rest of the older archives up (I have them back to the start in 1998; thanks Marco!) and eventually should have them all available and searchable. Please let me know of any problems or suggestions you have. In July, I think the archives got about 50,000 web hits (I've excluded the obvious spiders for search engines) from nearly 4000 unique hosts; it's getting more popular everyday, which is great. About 4500 of those hits were as a result of a search from one of 159 search engine portals.

The biggest benefit of moving this mailing list away from Panix was ending the big bills Doug used to pay for hosting it; it also seems to have increased the reliability of the list and the time it takes to deliver to the nearly 400 list participants. On the same server, I'm also hosting his radio show MP3 archive that can be reached here:

http://leftbusinessobserver.com/Radio.html

Be sure to check that out; there's lots of good stuff in the archives.

And finally, you might have noticed that the archives now sport ads; Doug and I are experimenting with this because the Google ad program is kind of interesting: they scan the site (in this case, individual postings) and try to "understand" enough of the content to be able to target the ads in a smarter way. One downside is that the first person to visit the ad will get a "generic" ad until the Google system has a chance to read the page (which they do pretty quickly!). But once they visit it, they seem to do a pretty good (if not downright funny -- sometimes you'll get one for a firm that specializes in LBOs!) job. There's a mechanism to restrict which advertisers appear, so if you're ever offended by an ad, drop me a note and I can blacklist them. Anyway, it seems to be working okay so far, but we're always happy to hear suggestions or complaints.
