Although the Debka File/Mossad claims about Chechens lurking in the Iraqi shadows may be total crap, a growing number of people of various political views are saying that jihadis are making their way to Iraq (and Afghanistan) to prove their worth against the occupying 'crusaders' (see link below).

Considering that men like Zbigniew Brezinski, only a few years ago, were boasting of bringing the USSR to its knees in Afghanistan by helping along the first international Islamist counter-insurgency, the US' present situation must, to say the least, seem ironic to many Russian observers. 'Blowback', succinct though it is, doesn't begin to capture the scope of this recylcing karma.

It wouldn't surpirse me if Russian vets of the Afghan campaign at all levels of command find it difficult to summon much sympathy for their American counterparts - particularly in Afghanistan.

Anyone (Chris?) have direct information on how the Russian people generally - and the military and intelligence services in particular - are interpreting the US' latest debacles?
