I think the Simpsons episode on school uniforms was the best commentary
on the subject.  In the satire, the students were issued uniforms, became
obedient, and even began blinking in unison.  (They made this creepy
squishing sound.)  Then the uniforms got rained on, turned into tie-dies,
and there was rebellion.  So, if you can get the kids to look the way you
want them to, then by God they'll act the way you want them to!  At
least, that seems to be the fantasy.
