...and more. They are not conforming because they are sheep. They inhabit a no man's land between childhood and adulthood, and they must literally give birth to themselves, with all the emotional consequences that entails. For example, take all that painting their rooms black or wearing all black. This is the death of childhood, the inevitable death of their parents whom they are symbolically murdering in order to assume a new authority -- their own. There's a lot of guilt, a lot of confusion, a lot of mourning, and a lot of false bravado.

The only people that share (and sometimes understand) what's going on with them are other teenagers, with whom they must identify and hang -- "sheep-like" according to some. OK, and then all this is totally blown out of proportion and exacerbated by the mass culture/commercial industry, but that's not the teen's fault.

Adolescence is like a bad acid trip. Be kind.
