Forming the first workers’ council at Kirkuk Oil Company is a step forward for emancipation of humanity in Iraq

On August 8, 2003, the workers of the North Oil Company in Kirkuk gathered at Arafa Park and chose their representatives in a direct and free election. This event is a great historic event not only for the oil workers and workers’ movement in Iraq but for the whole of the Iraqi society.

The oil workers have been always the backbone of the society, therefore the Baath regime had continued to oppress them and racially segregate them in order to prevent them from crushing the capitalist system. The history of the workers of the Oil Company in Kirkuk includes the famous Karobakhi strike, which shacked the Monarchy regime, and overthrown one of its most oppressive cabinets. Their history is unforgettable part of the history of the working class in Iraq for a better life.

The Worker Communist Party of Iraq, which is the working class’s struggle tool to liberate the Iraqi masses, congratulates the workers of North Oil Company on finding their council and will continue to support them. This great event is the first step toward realizing the working class’s economic, social and political wishes and aspirations.

Long live the oil workers
