Today, Dec. 1, is the first day of the Overtime Pay National Week of Action when activists like you will speak out together against President Bush's overtime pay take-away that would hurt millions of ordinary working Americans.
Since President Bush announced his overtime pay take-away in March, hundreds of thousands of e-activists like you have taken online actions that made a big difference. This week, we'll ask you to take online action, as well as offline action--in your workplace, in your neighborhood or another setting where you come in contact with lots of people.
Why? Well, already, hundreds of thousands of Americans are part of this week of action because they are getting this e-mail from us, their union or an allied organization. That is fantastic--but it is not enough, yet. In comparison, more than 100 million Americans may vote in the presidential election next year.
So here's your job this week--reach out to your friends, family and co-workers, relentlessly and repeatedly. BRING THEM INTO THIS FIGHT!
To get this week going, we're launching a new petition to help get the word out. Click on the link below to sign the petition: http://www.saveovertimepay.org/
Our goal is to get 100,000 new petition signers to oppose President Bush's overtime pay take-away during the week of action.
The schedule below outlines the plan for the week of action. The biggest part of this effort is the role you will play in getting the message out.
SCHEDULE FOR THE WEEK
MONDAY: Sign the online petition and e-mail your friends, family and co-workers and ask them to sign the online petition. Click here to sign: http://www.saveovertimepay.org/
TUESDAY: Follow up with a phone call to your friends, family and co-workers. Make sure they know about Bush's overtime pay take-away and how they can help stop it. The personal connection you make is very important.
WEDNESDAY: Check your e-mail. We'll e-mail you a link to a leaflet-petition you can download, print out and use to collect signatures opposing the overtime pay take-away.
THURSDAY: Continue to circulate the print version of the petition and report back on your activities. We'll begin to publish online reports from e-activists like you from the week of action.
FRIDAY: Check your e-mail. We'll send you an update on developments and a new, special online action.
During this week of action and next week you'll also get some e-mail appeals on other issues. Dec. 10 is International Human Rights Day when we'll speak out for restoring the freedom to choose a union in America. Major corporate accountability reforms, unemployment benefits and Medicare are all under attack. Plus, there are major fights for workers struggling on the job, including striking and locked-out grocery workers at Safeway-owned Vons, Kroger-owned Ralphs and Albertsons and grape workers at Gallo wines.
Remember to check your e-mail and look for the week of action e-mails.
Thanks for all you do. Together we will win.
