I seem to remember that Jerry Mander made some interesting points about marketing in his classic book "Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television." One point he made was that the constant barrage of advertising might not force us to buy products, but that when we do make a purchase decision, the names and brands are familiar to us due to all the stupid advertising.
