IMHO, this is an excellent article, and if you have any interest in the subject, you should download it now while it's still free to nonsubscribers. It's quite long but it's completely worth your time. It's full of surprises, it makes things clear, and it's got an answer. What more can you ask for? And on top of that, Cumings is one of the very few people writing on Korea who actually is a world-class scholar on the subject.
