AMD, Founder to open China design lab
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is setting up a design center with Founder Group, a Chinese PC manufacturer, that will focus on integrating AMD's processors into information appliances, it said Wednesday.
The center will be established in Beijing with Founder Group, and will begin by focusing on home digital media centers, AMD said in a statement. Founder will supply infrastructure and engineering staff while AMD will supply technology and support including development tools, engineering support and reference design kits.
AMD said the new lab is hoped to provide growth in use of its Alchemy and Geode processors in China.
The Alchemy processor is targeted at mobile and handheld devices and AMD has already shown a reference design for a Linux-based PDA (personal digital assistant) based on the chip. Its Geode processors, acquired from National Semiconductor earlier this year, are targeted at information appliances, thin clients and set-top boxes.
In late October, AMD announced it was working with one of China's largest IT distributors, Digital China Holdings Ltd., to push acceptance of its desktop Athlon XP, Athlon 64 and Opteron processors in China. Digital China will distribute the processors and plans to open 500 Digital China-AMD processor stores across China, it said on Oct. 31
