[lbo-talk] most lurid story of the year

Doug,

I don't get it. I certainly understand why MURDER is wrong... but if the person is already dead, what's the deal with eating them? I mean... it is legal in most US states to have sex with dead people (at least it isn't explicitly mentioned as a no-no)... why not be able to eat them? Savage writes: "Anyway, is Meiwes guilty of murder? At the very real risk of pissing off the "cannibal community"—and yes, Virginia, there is a cannibal community ("cannibal supporters" have been attending Meiwes's trial, lending him their "moral" support)—I take a hard-line position on cannibalism. I just think it's wrong." Perhaps cannibalism could be a new way to dispose of corpses. We already have cremation, burial, dissolution (rapidly becoming popular), sealed in plastic (only for the VERY rich), mulched into fertiliser naturally (which takes longer), and now... how about a culinary option? (see Mary Roach, STIFF, for details on contemporary disposal techniques). I'm not partial to it myself, but there is no reason to take human flesh off the table without discussion, is there? I only raise this because I'm reading a book on the Wari' who for years ate their dead as a means of working through the mourning process.... then the NTM Christians (of all people) made them stop. Thanks for the forward. Keep 'em coming.

[though it's short, I'm not posting it because it might gross out some readers - but this is a doozie]

Savage Love Dan Savage

Bernd Brandes was recorded on video in 2001 eating his own penis. Brandes isn't an auto-fellator, like others who've written in, but a man who wanted to be eaten by a cannibal. He found one on the Internet...
