Yes this is quite amazing. A few years ago, I read the novel "Independent People" by Harold Laxness (nobel prize winner). It was one of the best novels I've ever read and I was exceedingly puzzled that the diet of the most miserable and impovrished Finns as portrayed in the book seems to consist of 90% coffee (surely it must be imported and not cheap) and some fish.
