it's hard to separate that major flaw from the central flaw of the _actual application_ of the Popular Front program by the CPUSA and by other CPs, i.e., the allegiance of the "Party" to the USSR, which led to several major twists of the "Party Line" which confused and alienated not only Popular Front partners but many CP rank-and-filers. This led to a steady shrinkage of boththe Front and the "Party." It wasn't just McCarthyite attacks on the CP and "fellow travellers" that did it.

In fact, it has been a dream for many (such as James Weinstein?) that the US left could succeed by having a PF without a USSR.
