I may be over the quota, but can't refrain from saying that similar point has been made about India's freedom struggle. During periods of intense anti-British mass struggles, Hindu/Muslim conflicts, riots (communalism in Indian usage) etc would recede. Hindu/Muslims riots would gather momentum, when anti British struggles were declining. However, both communalisms, whether Hindu or Muslim, have very little to do with religion. They are fascistoid mass political movements.
